How does it feel?

Post by Saladin » Sat Sep 15, 2018 04:43

We are the last bits of parasitic bacteria surviving in pf's bloated corpse.

Feels good that it's not dead yet. Don't know how it got fixed though.

What have y'all been up to?

same ol' for me. still working through school. on my break right now after doing an operating systems class over the summer. SO glad that's over. it was incredibly challenging. i feel like every time i got the material down it was like, "btw what you just learned was actually an abstraction here's what's going down at a lower level." the depth was limitless. taking an algorithms class and a programming languages (very little programming - more so how they work?) class this upcoming term. have a feeling the algorithms one will kick my butt but we'll see.

other than that doing the usual vidya, tv, movies etc. got really into board games this year so that's been a ton of fun. so many good ones out there.

what's up with you?

I skipped OS in college, there's definitely some gaps in my knowledge. You'll probably know more than me soon.

Same here really. Excited for the new smash, played some new games, went on some fun trips, but I've mainly been working and playing a crap ton of Warhammer with my friend.

I like board games a lot too. Twilight Imperium is still my favorite even though it's a ridiculous mess. What are you into?

ah, OS is required at my uni. super interesting but fucking brutal.

Twilight Imperium looks like a blast. i'd love to sit down and dedicate an entire day to it but i don't know anyone who'd be into an 8+ hour game lol. maybe some day.

i've been playing Spirit Island, which is a really good co-op game where you play as island spirits and try to protect natives from explorers conquering & settling their land. there's very little randomness and you always know what the explorers are going to do each turn. the game is set up in a way that you basically never feel like you have the upper hand, which is kinda frustrating at times but also leads to a lot of triumphant moments when you play well. it's a real brain burner, though. while the rules aren't that complicated the decision space is fucking massive. i've only ever played it with my gf and the potential strategies each turn can be overwhelming. i haven't even attempted a 4 player game yet for that exact reason. we learned to just do some light strategizing and go with our gut, rather than meticulously plan out every situation. much more enjoyable that way. just a brilliantly designed game in general with a fresh theme to boot.

also been playing Terraforming Mars where you and others play as a corporation and attempt to colonize and terraform Mars. it's an excellent engine building game with just enough interactivity to make it not feel completely passive. you can kinda get in a stalemate situation where you and your opponents are just building your engine without moving towards ending the game (i.e. terraforming the planet) so i try to make sure all the players are cognizant that we could be here all day if we don't lol. the card art is also hokey as hell but i love every corny and silly bit of it.
